Lewis Powell (born 1845) is a Confederate double agent who works for Secretary of War Stanton as well as for a cabal of Southerners who conspire to kill Abraham Lincoln, little suspecting that Lincoln is terminally ill and about to stage an assassination that will circumvent the Constitutional crisis that would occur should he become incapacitated in office.
Powell was trained by the Union as a spy as well as receiving similar training in the South. However, despite being the son of a Christian minister he had already learned the skills of an outlaw before his 18th birthday.
According to various accounts, he went to work with the paramilitary forces serving under John Singleton Mosby. In January 1865, he turned up in a boardinghouse in Baltimore, Maryland and allegedly became a Lincoln assassination conspirator. The official story is that on July 7, 1865, he was hanged.
