Captain Nemo, real name Prince Dakkar, is a freedom fighter who resisted first the British colonization of his subcontinental fiefdom and then all European and similar colonial era expansionists.
His great wealth was turned to the production of extremely advanced technology, chief amongst which was his atomic submarine, the Nautilus.
Nothing concerning his past is revealed in the novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, excepting his having reason to hate the countries of the world and his having lost his family at some point in the past.
In The Mysterious Island, it is revealed that Captain Nemo is Prince Dakkar, son of the Hindu Raja of the Kingdom of Bundelkund in India, and also a descendant of the Muslim Sultan Fateh Ali Tipu of the Kingdom of Mysore in India. The latter famously fought a series of wars with the British, employing artillery rockets, which led to the introduction of military rocketry in the west.
He was deeply antagonistic to the British Empire, due to its conquest of India. After the bloody Indian Rebellion of 1857, one of the most devastating wars of the Victorian Era, in which he lost his family and his kingdom, he devoted himself to scientific research and developed an advanced submarine, the Nautilus.
He and a crew of his followers cruise the seas, battling injustice, especially imperialism, by preying on the shipping of the European colonial empires. They derive bullion from the various shipwrecks that dot the ocean, their most notable plundering ground being the Spanish wrecks in the Bay of Vigo.
He claims to have no interest in the affairs of the world above, but occasionally intervenes to aid the oppressed, giving salvaged treasure to the people of Crete who are revolting against their Ottoman Turkish rulers, by saving (both physically and financially) an Indian pearl hunter who was the unfortunate victim of a diving accident, or by saving the castaways from drowning in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and covertly watching over the castaways in The Mysterious Island.
Like many Indian princes of the era, Nemo has a European education, as he states that he had spent his youth studying and touring Europe. In his first meeting with Professor Aronnax and his companions, the latter speak to him in French, English, Latin and German, all of which Nemo later reveals he is fluent in.

The Nautilus
A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor, but not necessarily nuclear-armed. The Nautilus uses conventional small artillery mounted on its decks or stowed away ready to be deployed by its crew in a manner that would be familiar 50 years after its construction but for its time was utterly inconceivable except by the genius of Captain Nemo (and Jules Verne).
The large amount of power generated by a nuclear reactor allows nuclear submarines to operate at high speed for long periods, and the long interval between refuelings grants a range virtually unlimited, making the only limits on voyage times being imposed by such factors as the need to restock food or other consumables. The Nautilus remained submerged while traveling a distance of 20,000 Leagues.
THe Nautilus weigh 4,600 tons. It is 280 feet long and has a diameter of 40 feet. It requires a draft of 31 feet meaning they must be at least 31 feet off the sea floor at all times or have undergone an automatic crash unless Nemo or whoever is piloting the vessel makes a feat of Agility to allow the armored ramming serrations on the outer hull to smash through whatever sea floor obstruction - or the sea floor itself. If doing so then the damage from the serrations is still also inflicted on the Nautilus herself.
Maximum submerged depth is 5,000 feet. At that depth the Nautilus takes Great damage from pressure each full hour spent at the depth (this will not penetrate this Vehicle's Protection until that Protection has already been damaged or negated somehow). This damage is not inflicted until the Nautilus goes below 5,000 feet depth. The Nautilus can remain submerged for up to 80 days before needing to surface to replenish fresh air.
The Nautilus require 16 officers and 100 crew for proper functioning and operation and also has enough room for up to 16 passengers or Marines. With a full 16 extra people on board the submarine can only remain submerged for up to 60 days.
The Nautilus is pre-stressed and armored and has forward fitted serrations allowing it to deliberately ram a surface vessel, in effect turning the entire submarine into a giant torpedo. These serrations inflict Phenomenal intensity damage but only on large objects or characters such as ships, other submarines and Kaiju.

Contacts: Nemo is friendly with all those oppressed by colonialism and they with him. A handful of Westerners have made his acquaintance in the course of the years 1860-1870 but beyond that the man remained an enigma until the end of his life.
